FAQ

1. Connection Problems: You see this message "The computer you are dialing cannot establish connection".

  1. First, run through all settings in Dial up Networking. Right click on Properties, (make sure there are no dashes, slashes, or commas in the phone number). Also, check the SERVER TYPES tab (NETWORKING tab in Microsoft ME) that TCP/IP is the ONLY one checked off.
  2. If these settings are correct, go to Control Panel and Network. When the configuration box comes up check to make sure that there is ONLY ONE TCP/IP. This is very important….some new computers come equipped with AOL, and its own AOL TCP/IP adapter. If there is an AOL adapter and the customer does not use AOL, click on the AOL TCP/IP adapter and click REMOVE. You will have to reboot their system for these settings to take effect.
  3. If you still cannot get on go to Dial up Networking, GCNET Properties, and click on the Configure button under the modem. Click on the Options tab and check off "Bring up terminal window after dialing". Click OK and try again. (NOTE: this will bring up a black box that the user needs to put in their Login name. You will need to click continue).
  4. After this point you should have either connected or gotten the same message. If you do not get connected, make sure that you have the computer phone jack plugged into the correct place in the back of the computer. Also, try a portable phone to plug into the wall jack - see if they are hearing a dial tone or some noise on the line.

2. You are unable to surf.
  1. Can you get connected and/or can retrieve email? If so, then continue. If NOT, go to the above problem and run through those settings.
  2. Make sure in the Control Panel and Network that you only have ONE TCP/IP (more than one can cause this problem).
  3. If after the above steps have been done and you still have problems, remove TCP/IP from their Network configuration and reboot the machine. You will then have to go back in to REINSTALL the TCP/IP protocol.
  4. To install TCP/IP protocol: VERY IMPORTANT - make sure you have your Windows system CD or disk because it will sometimes ask to insert the disk!!!
    1. From the Configuration Tab, Click on Add
    2. Add PROTOCOLS
    3. Choose Microsoft from the LEFT side and TCP/IP from the RIGHT.
    4. Click OK.
  5. After installing, go through all of the settings again to be sure that everything has not changed. Then try again.
  6. If it still does not work you should uninstall and reinstall your Browser. You will need their system CD for this.
