Minutes of
January 22,1998
The next meeting
of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition will be Thursday March 26, 1998
at 4:00PM in Room 315 of the Continuing Education Building at Garrett Community
College. The public is invited to attend.
Present: Earleen Beckman, Sue Athey-Oxford,
Charlene Bennett, Loretta Kiedrowski, Mary Rosser, Charles Bowman, Charlotte
Sebold, Brenda McCartney, Kendra Todd
I. Announcements
A. Active Adults and Children Talking
(AACT) Training
The training, scheduled for February 10,
is open to any Coalition member interested in attending.
Goal 2: Secure and provide accurate
information regarding teen pregnancy to the TPPC and the community.
Goal 2/Objective 2: Increase
community awareness of teen pregnancy issues and sexually transmitted diseases.
B. Children’s Health Initiative
On February 2d, representatives from OCYF
will be meeting with Dr. Wasserman to discuss funding for the Children’s
Health Initiative. The Initiative is a proposed health insurance program
for low-income families.
C. Hall of Fame
Nominations for women to be inducted into
the Hall of Fame are due by February 6th.
II. Updates
A. Baby Think It Over
The Northern High School cheerleaders will
be taking the dolls to a basketball game and keeping them over the weekend.
The Republican newspaper will do an article.
Goal 2/Objective 2: Increase community awareness
of teen pregnancy issues and sexually transmitted diseases.
B. ICAPPP Grant
The Local Management Board has approved $5000
to the grant application. The Governor’s Council on Adolescent Pregnancy
has verbally approved the $10,000 grant application although written approval
has not yet been received.
C. Annual Conference on Teen Pregnancy and
Parenting
Earleen distributed handouts from the conference.
Michelle Zollner and Linda Wengard attended the conference.
Goal 2/Objective 3: Get information to
adults and teens regarding 1) knowledge about birth control and 2) access
to birth control, including abstinence.
III. Action Plan
Coalition members reviewed the action
plan matrix and suggested changes. **SEE ATTACHED. **Note:
copies of the TPPC strategic plan are available from Earleen Beckman at
301-334-8111 or send an E-mail request to Healthed@gcnet.net
Goal 3: Develop and implement the TPPC’s comprehensive
strategic plan for county specific interventions to prevent teen pregnancy.
Goal 3/Objective 1: Refine and expand the
action plan to address each of the objectives in goals 1 & 2.
Objective 1- Increase community awareness
Dr. McCartney suggested including in the
steps "Support GC Public Schools efforts in preventing teen pregnancy."
A public relations committee was formed. Members
include Dr. McCartney, Earleen, Mary Jane Berry, Loretta, Charlene, Sue,
and Paul. The committee will develop newspaper articles and radio psa’s
and publish the newsletter. All material to include the newsletter must
be presented to the Coalition before being published. The meeting minutes
will include all proposed articles and draft newsletter. Coalition members
will review the proposed articles and call in changes to the PR committee.
